John 1:1

Jun 24, 2024    Pastor Mike Fanning

PASSAGE: John 1:1 - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

PAUSE: Jesus, as the Eternal Word, is the divine self-expression of God. He is eternally in relationship with the Father (“with God” = Think Trinity!) and is also fully God Himself! (“was God”). When you think of Jesus as “Word” think of it this way. God is always speaking, always revealing Himself to us. Jesus, the Son, did begin in the manger at Bethlehem that 1st Christmas. “In the beginning was the Word” is intentionally copying the language of Genesis 1:1 to make the point that just like the Father has eternally existed, so has the Son. And the Son’s unique purpose is to reveal the Father, to show us what the Father is like in His character and purposes.

C.S. Lewis famously said the Jesus was either Lord, a lunatic, or a liar. Meaning that Jesus was who claimed to be, Lord God. Or he was delusional and just thought he was God. Or he was a charlatan and lied to people to gain a following. But the one thing that Jesus was not was just a good person or a good teacher. Jesus claimed to be God and Jesus is fully God!

PRAYER:  Lord Jesus, I praise You that You are the Eternal Son of God and that You reveal the Father! Amen.
