Zechariah 9:9
Zechariah’s prophetic description of the coming Messiah is literally fulfilled in the “Triumphal Entry” of Jesus. (See Mt. 21:5; Jn 12:15). Jesus purposefully enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey to the cheers of the gathering crowd. This is such a climactic and anti-climactic moment at the same time. The Jewish crowd is correct in concluding that Jesus is Messiah and that He is now presenting Himself officially. He might just ride into town and take over and run the Romans out and put Israel back in charge. Exactly what they have been waiting for…for centuries! But that is not what happened. The salvation that He came to bring, the salvation that they needed, and that we need, was the deliverance from the sin that ruled each of their hearts. Messiah was coming to die for humanity's sinful rebellion in order that He would become King and sit on the throne of our lives!
PASSAGE: Zechariah 9:9 - "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
PAUSE: What are you looking for in Jesus? The Jews were looking for a miracle worker and a political advocate who would improve their lives. Today, we are no different; we want Jesus to improve our circumstances. But we may, too, miss the point of His coming. Jesus is to be our King; we are His chosen servants.
PRAYER: Father, help me to see Jesus as He is. Remove all my false narratives about Jesus. Today, I acknowledge Him as my King and my Lord.
