Matthew 4:19

"Go fish!" I loved playing this card game as a kid. When it was your turn, the goal was to correctly guess a card in your opponents hand, and they would hand it over. If they didn't have the card, you were told to "go fish" and draw a card out of the center pile. These were NOT words you wanted to hear, because they were only said when your first plan failed. The command to "go fish" was a backup plan. But when Jesus told his disciples "go fish", this wasn't a back up plan. He didn't tell them this because their initial plans weren't working out. Jesus' command for His disciples, and for us today, is "go fish!" Many times we are waiting on God to tell us WHERE to go, but all along He has already told us WHAT to go do. Tell others about Christ and how He has impacted your life, and see how He will fill your nets.

PASSAGE: Matthew 4:19 - “And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

PAUSE: Perhaps the Lord will never call us to move away from our homeland, but he does call all of us to fish. Jesus called us to follow him, not to a new land but to a new way of living. He wants us to go and tell others about Christ.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, grant me the courage to go and fish. Bring people into my life during the new year with whom I can share the love of Christ.
