Isaiah 53:5
Pay attention to the graphic language of substitution in this verse! “He (Jesus) was pierced...crushed…punished for our transgressions....iniquities.” Isaiah is describing just how severely God poured out His wrath on Jesus as Jesus bore the sins of all humanity. This is a sobering reminder that our Holy God had to satisfy His judgment against sin. But the good news is that Jesus took our sin and God’s judgment against sin upon Himself in order that we might be fully forgiven and experience peace with God. This peace describes the reality that once forgiven, we enter into new union or relationship with God. This is the love of God in action on our behalf. I find it amazing that the cross of Christ satisfies the justice of God and the love of God at the same time. Thank You Jesus!
PASSAGE: Isaiah 53:5 - "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed."
PAUSE: Isaiah vividly foreshadows the cross and the crucifixion of Christ. Too often, we lose focus and drift from the gruesomeness of the cross. Christ suffered and died for our sins, our transgressions, our iniquities. Yet Isaiah showed us that in the wounds, there is healing for each one of us sinners!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, forgive me of all my sins! Heal my broken heart. Please help me experience your healing for all the messes I created.
