Some problems that our local community faces are a result of the lack of available jobs. On a larger scale, large populations in an entire country are unable to get out of survival mode due to a struggling economy and a lack of higher-paying jobs for those people who want to work and support themselves and their families. As a result, they are dependent on aide, stripping them of their dignity and leaving them hopeless that anything can change.

The African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” may be truer now than ever. Destructive influences can distract and even sabotage a child’s ability to develop into his or her full potential. As a parent, the constant fight against some of the cultural values our children are being bombarded with can be discouraging.

Today, nearly 1 billion people in the developing world do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. Typically, women walk miles to get it, and when women walk alone, they are often vulnerable to sexual assault. Even though water is as necessary as oxygen for survival, far too many people spend a majority of their time and money acquiring it.

There are a number of pillars that are needed to make a strong community. They include functions such as education, housing, business, religion, healthcare, and government. When any of these pillars are not present, or are ineffective, problems arise that threaten the future of that community. Oftentimes, these problems contribute to poverty, unemployment, crime, or hopelessness.

Natural disasters can debilitate an area for years. Some disasters create other significant problems for the community already impacted. It may take years, and sometimes decades, to restore life to normal. Without outside assistance, the situation can seem beyond hope.

According to UNICEF, over 150 million children have lost one or more parents. Caring for orphans is mentioned 34 times in Scripture. In fact, “pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father” is defined by caring for orphans.

According to World Bank, 10.7% of the world’s population live in extreme poverty, living on less than $1.90 a day. This amount is not sustainable for most families, and without outside help from others, those families have no hope for change.

War, violence, and persecution has forced millions of families from their homes and countries. According to the United Nations, in Syria alone, 4.8 million people have fled to nearby countries like Jordan, and 6.6 million others are internally displaced within Syria.
